As the Kallang Basin Swimming Complex and St Wilfred Sports Centre prepare to close their doors in the latter half of 2025, plans are underway to transform these sites into new public housing developments. The Kallang Basin complex will cease operations on September 1, 2025, followed closely by the St Wilfred centre, which will close on October 1, 2025. In anticipation of these closures, the government is actively studying proposals for new public housing projects at both locations, indicating a significant shift in the use of these properties.

The proposed developments are expected to consist of Build-to-Order (BTO) projects, with a particular focus on designating them as Plus flats. This classification entails stricter resale conditions, ensuring that the units remain affordable and accessible to a wider demographic. With a mix of two- to four-room flats being considered, these future housing options are poised to meet the growing demand for modern residential units in the area.

The projected height of up to 36 storeys is feasible due to the favorable plot ratio of the sites, allowing for a more efficient use of land and enabling the construction of a substantial number of housing units.

Location plays a crucial role in the viability of these potential public housing projects. The Kallang Basin site is strategically situated within walking distance of the Geylang Bahru MRT Station, enhancing its attractiveness for prospective residents. The accessibility to public transportation is a significant factor in urban living, making it easier for residents to commute to work and access essential services.

As urban populations continue to rise, the need for well-located housing becomes increasingly pressing, and the Kallang Basin site is well-positioned to address this need.

Historically, the Geylang Bahru area has seen most of its public housing stock built during the 1970s. As such, this long-standing infrastructure is in dire need of modernization and redevelopment to meet contemporary living standards.

The transformation of the Kallang Basin Swimming Complex and St Wilfred Sports Centre into public housing developments represents an opportunity to revitalize the area, attracting new residents and fostering a sense of community. By integrating modern design and amenities into these new developments, the government aims to not only enhance the living experience but also to contribute positively to the local environment.
